Parker & Son Advises on Home Safety

By Sarah

As Organized by the National Safety Council, June is National Safety Month and Parker & Sons, Arizona’s premier home services company, is excited to participate by advising on home safety.

As observed each year in June, the focus of National Safety Month is “to reducing the leading causes of injuries and death at work, on the road and in our homes and communities.” The National Safety Council focuses on a different safety topic for each week of the month. The first week is “Stand Ready to Respond.” The second week is “Be Healthy.” The third week is “Watch Out for Dangers.” The final, fourth week is “Share Roads Safely.”

Parker offers advice for the third week of National Safety Month, “Watch Out for Dangers.”

Dangers can be ever-present. Parker & Sons notes that most people spend a majority of their time at work or home, making these areas on which to focus.

The #1 leading cause of unintentional injury and death in homes is poisoning. Potential poisoning deaths can be caused by chemicals, gases, or other substances. Potentially hazardous materials should always be kept out of reach of children. They should be clearly labeled. All home should have a carbon monoxide detector with which to detected deadly carbon monoxide gas. It should be tested on a monthly basis.

The second leading cause of unintentional injuries and death in homes are falls. To prevent falls, walkways should remain clear of obstructions and obstacles at all time. Non-slip shoes are excellent at preventing slips and falls on slick surfaces such as on tile. Home should be well lit to prevent tripping. Nightlights are advisable along high-traffic areas at night. Individuals who have trouble walking should use assistance devices.

“Staying safe is all about be aware of your surroundings and not taking risks. Poisoning and falling may be the leading causes of death in the home but people should be careful in the kitchen as well. Burns and cuts cause a lot of injuries every year,” said Josh Kelly of Parker & Sons.
