Hastings & Hastings Speaks on Summer Safety Concerns

By Sarah

– Hastings & Hastings, a Phoenix institution, has been serving accident victims in the Valley of the Sun for over 35 years. With over three decades working in Phoenix, the team at Hastings & Hastings speaks from experience on summer safety concerns.

Temperatures in the Valley of the Sun rose above 100 degrees in early April. Hastings & Hastings notes, this is the sign of a hot summer. The summer months in Phoenix are a hot and inhospitable time. However, it is quite possible to survive the summer months safely, even enjoyably. Hastings & Hastings speaks on the topic.

Staying hydrated is the most important thing that people should focus on when living in the infernal heat of a Phoenix summer. Even mild dehydration can have major side effects. Severe dehydration may even lead to death. The human body loses water naturally over the course of a day. This loss is accelerated by hot temperatures and aridity, the two defining elements of a Phoenix summer. To combat dehydration, individuals must drink water. Health authorities recommend drinking at least eight (8) ounces glasses of water every day. Symptoms of dehydration include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, dry mouth, inability to sweat, and decreased urine production. If individuals experience these symptoms in a prolonged fashion or have a fever over 101 degrees, they should seek professional medical attention.

Serious sunburns are a major safety concern year-round, but particularly so during the summer. If individuals know they will be spending time outside in the sun, it is important that they wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15. Hastings & Hastings further advises individuals to seek out shade as often as possible. Sunburns not only poses immediate health concerns, but they may increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.

Finally, Hastings & Hastings speaks on the importance of drowning awareness and prevention during the summer. Every year, children tragically drown in Phoenix pools. The key elements of drowning prevention are security, awareness, and vigilance.
