Dag Folger and Brad Zizmor Receive 2016 Good Design Is Good Business Award

By Sarah

Site Optimized LLC is pleased to announce that Dag Folger and Brad Zizmor are recipients of the Architectural Record 2016 Good Design Is Good Business Awards for designing the new offices of Horizon Media—one of New York’s largest media agencies.

Annual Good Design is Good Business Awards recognizes exemplary architectural solutions that were instrumental in the growth and success of a range of businesses; from start-ups to non-profits to major corporations. The high point of this year’s award is the renovation of new offices of Horizon Media, one of New York’s largest media agencies which was done by Dag Folger and Brad Zizmor, and were singled out for their contributions, exhibition of talent to attracting and enhancing employee well-being, improving community relations, and, ultimately, boosting the client’s bottom line.

Horizon Media is a privately owned company, which occupied offices in several buildings in Manhattan, but decided to concentrate its operations in an old printing plant downtown. With the help of Architecture Plus Information (A+I), established in 1996 by award winning Brad Zizmor and Dag Folger (who both trained at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation), Horizon began to incrementally renovate the 14th to 16th floors of a concrete-frame structure, each about 66,000 square feet.

Dag Folger and Brad Zizmor’s genius was brought to bear when A+I first carved out a central interior hall for a large, open steel stair: from the reception area on the 16th floor. The exceptional architects also cut out smaller rectangular openings between the floors to allow even more visual permeability, and added another connecting stair in the northwest end of the triplex.

With the expertise of Dag Folger and Brad Zizmor, Horizon has been able to test ways that architecture can change as the company’s culture evolves. The agency says it is finding that the headquarters, admitting expansive views of downtown and ample daylight, helps attract and retain an energetic staff. “We have been growing at 20 percent a year,” says Douglas Shangold, director of facilities management and procurement for the company, who also thinks that bringing potential clients to the space for the final pitch has helped seal deals.
