Coming-of-Age Novel Finds Humor in Libertarian Seasteading

By Sarah

Lovers of liberty, drug addicts, armed militiamen and home school Christians float together in a government-free paradise. What could go wrong?

April 18, 2016, Portland, OR – A politician, a millionaire, a minister and a militiaman live together in a floating city. An indie book by JW Bruns envisions a libertarian utopia as the backdrop to his satirical novel “Liberty Awash”.

Protagonist Rudi Wu, a recent college graduate with a degree in analytics, lands in Liberstead, a floating independent state. She encounters people who drink and drug daily, gun toting militia men who quote founding fathers, an eccentric millionaire with three wives, and an ex-governor who lectures word salad. Rudi tries to apply her technical skills to understanding the political maelstrom while the city embarks on a dramatic crossing of the Pacific Ocean.

“Many people dream of the economic prosperity and personal freedom inherent to a libertarian community,” says JW Bruns, author of the book. “I wanted to weave a story of high minded idealists, living out the dream with no taxes or rules. The characters depict many of the differing ideals of people who call themselves libertarian. Humor abounds as different types of libertarians express their political philosophy.”

A technophile like his character, Bruns brings to live a practical vision of a seastead. A floating community of 1000 people strives to be self-sufficient and run with no government. Drugs are legal, and guns are freely carried in this utopian vision of American freedom. Twelve-step programs make a prominent appearance, as the author points out that AA is the largest and longest lived organization that has no leaders, rules or fees.

The Kindle version of Liberty Awash is available for $4.20 on Amazon. The Kindle version is available free on International 420 Day (April 20, 2016) and on the 20th of every month. The book is free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers. The paperback is 280 pages and costs $9.95. Liberty Awash features 40 chapter illustrations by the artist Ryan Incandenza.
